This autumn, we are celebrating the 225th anniversary of the National Library of Luxembourg (BnL) together. Join the Discovery Days and explore the treasures of cultural heritage and the international collections of the country’s largest library. Discover our wide range of services and dive into the heart of an institution that has been preserving and sharing Luxembourg’s intellectual heritage for more than two centuries.

Discovery Days

We are delighted to invite you to our Discovery Days! Our programme includes a tour of our closed stacks and a Discovery Tour of the Reading Room. Take the opportunity to meet our staff and engage in inspiring conversations about literature, art, music, culture and science.

For all the curious of the extraordinary, we have prepared a special highlight: Join our exciting presentations of the BnL’s special collections and experience rare and precious documents that have shaped the country’s history.

Additionally, we offer short film screenings and workshops: Learn how to make iron gall ink, how to bind books or draw mangas. Workshops on the Luxembourg Web Archive, our search engine a-z.lu, our selection of digital books ebooks.lu and our VOD offer will be rounding off our programme of events for you.

Discovery Tour

Our Discovery Tour is the perfect opportunity to explore the National Library at your own pace and according to your preferences. Discover the Reading Room and storage spaces through 9 carefully designed thematic stations. Meet our experts and learn more about our wide remit and fascinating collections.

BnL Backstage

Take a behind-the-scenes look during our exclusive guided tours through our storage spaces. The sessions are multilingual and provide insights into our infrastructure and how we preserve the intellectual heritage of the country.

Visits to the "Vu Gäert a Bicher" exhibition with the Director of the BnL (Fully booked)

Discover Luxembourg’s parks, gardens and vegetable patches through a guided tour of the Vu Gäert a Bicher exhibition with Claude D. Conter, Director of the BnL. This exhibition includes everything from fertiliser advertisements to sumptuous botanical illustrations, songs, magazines, prints, books and postcards.

What you've always wanted to ask us

Do you have any questions about the BnL, its services and its procedures? Would you like to share your ideas and impressions with the directorate of the National Library? Then take the opportunity to participate in our two office hours sessions!

Saturday’s session will focus on incoming donations from private collections and how they are handled. Director Claude D. Conter and Deputy Director Carlo Blum explain how your contribution can help the BnL to preserve Luxembourg’s written heritage.

For Sunday’s session, you can select the topics that fascinate you the most and discuss them with the BnL management.

a-z.lu workshop (Places available)

This workshop will teach you how to carry out an effective search in just a few clicks. Take part in practical exercises with our passionate team in order to hone your search skills, be it for printed documents or online resources. We’re here to guide you and answer all your questions.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience. Our staff will assist you in Luxembourgish, French, German and English.

To make the most out of this workshop, we recommend that you have previously registered with the National Library or another library in the bibnet.lu network and are in possession of a valid a-z.lu user account.

ebooks.lu workshop (Places available)

Learn how to carry out targeted searches to find the e-books of your choice and master the use of this free service, offered by the BnL, the Bicherbus and 11 public libraries. Our dedicated team will guide you through the process, so that you can take full advantage of the wealth of this digital offering.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience. Our staff will assist you in Luxembourgish, French, German and English.

eluxemburgensia.lu workshop (Places available)

Dive into the vast collection of heritage documents that have been digitised by the BnL. Our experts will guide you through the various features of the eluxemburgensia.lu portal and teach you how to carry out effective documentary searches. This workshop will give you the opportunity to discover the magazines, newspapers and other resources that have shaped the country’s social, cultural and political history.

Ink preparation workshop (Fully booked)

Metal gall ink was undoubtedly the most widely used ink from Antiquity to the 20th century. It is made from natural galls and an iron compound. Freshly prepared, this ink appears pale grey, while its typical blue-black colour is revealed when exposed to air. Join our workshop and make your own metal gall ink, as well as a number of other historic inks from plant ingredients.

MéNuLu presentation - Médiathèque numérique du Luxembourg (Places available)

Join us for a presentation of the Médiathèque numérique du Luxembourg – MéNuLu. This collaborative project between the Cité Bibliothèque, the Centre national de l’audiovisuel and the BnL offers online access to a vast collection of documentaries, series, fiction films and children’s films. Whether you’re a film buff or a documentary enthusiast, MéNuLu is an audiovisual offering not to be missed.

Since its inception, the BnL has been collecting and preserving music documents. The Cedom is dedicated to collecting and preserving Luxembourg’s musical heritage and making it accessible to the public. The Cedom holds an extensive collection of sound recordings, ranging from CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, cassettes to audio tapes. In addition, it acts as a central music archive in Luxembourg by collecting the works of composers and musicians.

Anyone over the age of 14 can join the National Library for free and take advantage of the many services on offer. You do not need a library card to take part in the Discovery Days.
